Flavio Bolsonaro stepped off a private jet at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport at 9:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, completing a rapid departure from Brazil that began after the country's Supreme Court ordered him to surrender his passports. The 45-year-old senator arrived in Florida with his wife and two daughters shortly after losing the presidential runoff election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by a margin of approximately 4.4 million votes.
The family left Brazil late Tuesday, crossing into Argentina through a land border checkpoint before boarding a charter plane. Flight data indicates the aircraft landed in Guayaquil, Ecuador, at 4 a.m. local time before taking off for Miami. A Brazilian diplomat told the Associated Press that Bolsonaro used an Italian passport for the journey, a move that allowed him to bypass standard exit scrutiny at the border.
The Supreme Court accused Bolsonaro of corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. The investigation centers on allegations that he used a sports betting company to launder fraudulent deductions from government pensions. In a separate matter, he faces charges of accepting millions of dollars from a disgraced banker. Bolsonaro denied wrongdoing in a video released Monday, stating he was organizing opposition to the election results among congressional colleagues.
President Lula addressed supporters outside the presidential residence in Brasília on Tuesday, the day he turned 81. He described Bolsonaro's departure as a shameful act that prevented the senator from staying in Brazil to prove the accusations against him were false. Meanwhile, Argentine President Javier Milei, a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, did not comment directly on the defeat. However, presidential spokesperson Juan Pablo Carreira stated on social media that the Milei administration rescued Bolsonaro from the claws of communism.
Donald Trump praised Bolsonaro and his family as fine people while telling reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday that the election was strange and terrible. He previously claimed the vote was rigged, a statement made without presenting supporting evidence. Leaders from around the world and the Organization of American States have endorsed the result, congratulating Lula on his re-election. The United States has imposed double-digit sanctions on Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, amid these diplomatic shifts.
Before leaving Brasília, Bolsonaro visited his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for his role in the 2022 election loss and subsequent coup attempt. Jair Bolsonaro also fled to Florida after the 2022 election but returned to Brazil three months later. Flavio Bolsonaro, whose eight-year term as a senator expires on January 31, 2027, has not indicated whether he plans to return to Brazil to contest the legal proceedings against him.
