Yaari Lieberman stepped off a bus on Sunday with his wife, only to be seized by Israeli Defense Forces Military Police. The officers, dressed in civilian clothes and without visible identification badges, took the newlywed groom from the street while he and his bride were en route to a family celebration. Lieberman’s wife reportedly feared he had been kidnapped when the men did not announce themselves as police.

The arrest followed a specific protocol that intensified the controversy. According to reports, the officers tracked Lieberman using his cellphone location data. They removed him from the scene and transferred him directly to a military prison. A military court subsequently sentenced him to 20 days in jail, a ruling that has ignited fury within the ultra-Orthodox community.

The incident occurred during a Sheva Brachot, a traditional series of festive meals held in the week following a Jewish wedding. Lieberman had married just days before his detention. The timing of the arrest, occurring in front of his bride during a joyous family event, has become the central point of contention for religious political figures.

MK Yitzhak Goldknopf, chairman of Agudat Yisrael, condemned the action as a "new low in the hunt against Torah scholars." He accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of failing to honor a commitment to pass legislation regulating the status of yeshiva students. Goldknopf stated that the responsibility for the disgraceful arrests lies squarely on Netanyahu's shoulders and demanded the groom's immediate release.

Other senior haredi leaders joined the call for intervention. MK Yaakov Asher, chairman of United Torah Judaism, appealed directly to the defense minister on Sunday. Asher described the arrest as an "opaqueness that knows no bounds" and urged the minister to act quickly to return Lieberman to his family. MK Yinon Azoulay, chairman of Shas, moved to sign an urgent petition supporting the demand for immediate release.

This was not the first time Military Police attempted to detain Lieberman. On October 6, officers arrived at his parents' home in Modi'in. However, a crowd of protesters gathered outside the residence and successfully blocked the arrest. After approximately two hours of demonstration, the officers withdrew, leaving Lieberman free for another month.

The detention of Lieberman has heightened tensions regarding the enforcement of mandatory IDF conscription for ultra-Orthodox men. Haredi parties are demanding new laws to clarify the military service status of yeshiva students, arguing that the current lack of legislation has led to chaotic and symbolic arrests. The defense establishment maintains that it must enforce conscription requirements while political negotiations continue.
