St. Petersburg will host its fifth annual St. Pete Reads! Lit Fest on Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Legacy Gardens at the Woodson African American Museum of Florida. The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2240 9th Ave S.
The festival was established by the Cultured Books Literacy Foundation, a nonprofit focused on strengthening reading culture in South St. Petersburg. The organization has held the event for five consecutive years to bring authors and families together.
Programs for the day include book swaps, storytelling sessions, and workshops led by children’s writers from across the United States. Local musical performances will feature the Al Downing Jazz Association and Mary Corbett, a violinist with the Florida Orchestra.
The lineup includes several prominent children’s authors and illustrators. Layesha Walton will present “Galaxy Girl.” Carole Boston Weatherford, a Children’s Literature Legacy Award winner, will discuss “Black Hands: Builders of Our Nation.” Gregory Christie, an award-winning illustrator, will also appear to talk about “Black Hands: Builders of Our Nation” and “Jazz Baby.”
Founder Lorielle J. Hollaway said on the foundation’s website, “I don’t believe reading should feel like something we have to do. It should be something we discover, enjoy, and share.”
Registration is encouraged for attendees. The event is open to the public with no cover charge.
