The war in Ukraine has now lasted more than four and a half years. Active combat continues on the ground, marking a continuation of a conflict that President Donald Trump promised to resolve shortly after taking office.

During a campaign rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on July 7, 2023, Trump told supporters he would settle the war before moving into the Oval Office. He stated, “The side. I want people to stop dying. That’s the side I’m on.” Since then, the administration has engaged in multiple diplomatic efforts to reach a settlement.

Trump has met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy twice at the White House. He also held a single meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in August 2025 in Anchorage, Alaska. Following that session, Trump described the discussion as productive. He noted, “There were many, many points that we agreed on.. So, there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

Legislative action has also fluctuated in recent months. On Sept. 18, Trump signed the Lindsey Graham Act, a bipartisan bill that imposed sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia. However, on Oct. 16, he signed an executive order that waived those specific sanctions.

The next scheduled diplomatic developments remain under review. Current efforts focus on bridging the remaining differences identified during the August meeting in Alaska.
