Rain Soaks Volcanic Rocks, Toppling Formation in Busy Cappadocia Site

Volcanic rock from a large formation fell in the Goreme district of central Turkey on Thursday, killing two people and injuring a third. The collapse occurred in the Cappadocia region, a major tourist destination known for its unique geological structures. Local officials confirmed the casualty count shortly after the incident.

Huseyin Kok, the regional governor, attributed the slide to intense rainfall that saturated the ground and rock surfaces in the days prior. He stated that the heavy precipitation likely weakened the structural integrity of the cliff face, leading to the sudden drop of stone and debris into the area below. Rescue teams from medical and emergency services arrived on the scene immediately after the initial fall.

Search crews remained at the site through the evening, digging through rubble to locate any other individuals who might be trapped beneath the fallen material. Officials said they had not yet determined the nationalities of the two victims. The area was crowded with visitors at the time of the collapse because it coincided with the Republic of Turkey Day holiday, a period of high traffic for the region.

Cappadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage site that draws large numbers of international and domestic travelers each year. The site features distinctive fairy chimney formations and ancient underground cities carved into the soft volcanic rock. The Thursday incident interrupted the daily flow of tourists who typically gather near the base of these formations for sightseeing and photography.
