Christa Pike will likely remain on death row in Tennessee unless the state courts decide to change her status. Governor Bill Lee made that assessment on Wednesday, stating that Pike remains incarcerated under current state law despite the recent procedural failure.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. In September, prison officials administered two doses of lethal injection. The process failed to end her life, leaving her in a hospital for several days. She has since returned to the prison facility. Pike is currently able to walk independently and speak in full sentences.

The governor addressed the question of whether the state will attempt an execution again or commute her sentence to life in prison. Lee said, “I suspect her sentence will be the same as before unless determined otherwise by the courts.” He noted that the specific circumstances of her crime and incarceration status support this view.

Executions in Tennessee are paused through the end of 2026. The state is investigating the specific factors that caused the September procedure to fail. This was the second botched execution attempt in the state this year.

Frank Strada, the commissioner of the Department of Correction, resigned from his post following the incident. Lee announced that Strada will depart his role by the end of the month. The governor expects to name a new commissioner within the next few days to lead the department through the remainder of the pause.
