More than 12 inches of rain triggered a flood watch, with drier air expected to arrive by Friday.

Highlands County remains under a flood watch until 3 p.m. Monday after localized rainfall totals exceeded 12 inches. Emergency officials are monitoring rising water levels as persistent downpours continue to affect parts of the county.
The National Weather Service issued the alert after heavy rain bands soaked central Florida neighborhoods. Showers are expected to persist through early afternoon before drying conditions develop from mid-afternoon onward. Meteorologist Valerie Mills reported that a strong cold front will push through the state late Thursday into early Friday.
The frontal boundary will sweep away tropical moisture and bring much drier air to the region. Residents can expect noticeable drops in humidity and cooler morning temperatures starting this weekend. These conditions are projected to continue into next week.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the full extent of structural damage or announced specific road closures across Highlands County. Officials have also not detailed whether emergency shelters will need to open for displaced residents. Current data indicates that lingering road impacts remain a concern for drivers.
The information for this report was gathered from county emergency advisories and weather monitoring alerts. The flood watch status will be updated as rain bands shift and the cold front approaches the region.
