The Israel Football Association will submit a formal complaint to UEFA against the Football Association of Ireland. The filing centers on comments made by Irish national team manager Heimir Hallgrimsson, who accused Israel of committing genocide during the lead-up to recent international fixtures.
Hallgrimsson spoke before the September matches, stating, “We are not playing with genocide; we are playing against genocide. We are playing against Israel; we are not playing with Israel.” The IFA intends to use these statements as the primary basis for its case. The complaint will also address how Israeli journalists were handled during pre-match and post-match press conferences. N12 reported that the association expects to detail heated exchanges that interrupted one such session.
The two Nations League games took place in Hungary and Serbia between September and October. Irish players bowed their heads during the playing of Israel’s national anthem and skipped the traditional pre-match handshakes. Ireland defeated Israel 3-0 in the first encounter, while the second match ended in a 1-1 draw.
UEFA is currently reviewing a separate set of allegations involving racist chants by Israeli supporters directed at Irish players. The IFA has denied these claims. Any disciplinary outcome from the new complaint would not alter the final scores or require the matches to be replayed.
Possible sanctions include monetary fines or player suspensions. The IFA confirmed the complaint is scheduled for submission as part of the ongoing regulatory review.
