Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 on Sunday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium in Clearwater. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the division rivals and solidified the Buccaneers’ position in the NFC South standings. Heavy rain fell throughout the first half and into the third quarter, creating slick field conditions that favored a ground-based offensive strategy.
The Buccaneers finished the game with 324 rushing yards, establishing a new franchise record for a single game. The previous mark was 283 yards, set in November 2015 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Quarterback Baker Mayfield did not complete a single forward pass during the entire contest. The team won by multiple possessions without a completed pass from the starting quarterback.
Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. threw four interceptions and completed only eight of 24 pass attempts. The Falcons’ running game was limited to an average of 3.5 yards per carry. Buccaneers linebacker Alex Anzalone recorded two interceptions and six total tackles, including one for a loss. Defender Rueben Bain Jr. disrupted several plays from the defensive line, though the team recorded no sacks or quarterback hits.
Chase McLaughlin kicked three field goals for Tampa Bay. The defense forced turnovers in monsoon conditions during the first half, with the final interception occurring in the fourth quarter. The team’s recent defensive performance has placed them second in the league in expected points added, a metric influenced heavily by their last two victories over Carolina and Atlanta.
The Buccaneers now sit 0.5 games behind the first-place team in the NFC South. This standing follows the Carolina Panthers’ loss to the Green Bay Packers earlier in the week. The team enters a Sunday Night Football matchup against the Chicago Bears next week. Chicago recently acquired defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons in a trade involving multiple first-round picks.
The Bears are led by offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who will test the Buccaneers’ defensive unit. The upcoming game marks the first high-stakes prime-time appearance for Tampa Bay since their initial 1-5 start to the season.
