Tampa Bay Lightning star winger Nikita Kucherov recorded three points on Saturday, just 24 hours after formally requesting a trade from his organization. The 33-year-old Russian contributed to the team's offensive output during a 5-4 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators.

Lightning coach Jon Cooper stated that the league's reigning most valuable player remains fully committed to the group. Cooper told reporters before the game that Kucherov is 100% a part of the team. He added that nothing has changed regarding the franchise's goals for the year, though the context of how those goals are pursued may differ.

The trade request comes as Kucherov prepares to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. His current eight-year, $76 million contract is set to expire. Kucherov and his agent, Dan Milstein, have attempted to finalize a contract extension since the previous season ended. The pair informed general manager Julien BriseBois on Friday that the winger was no longer interested in re-signing.

BriseBois issued a statement saying he had no interest in dealing the franchise's career points leader. Kucherov is seeking a six-year extension with an average annual value near $20 million, according to The Athletic. He holds a modified no-trade clause that allows him to submit a list of 10 approved teams for Tampa Bay to consider, ESPN reported.

Cooper warned observers not to interpret Kucherov's on-ice performance as a sign of his desire to leave. The coach said he did not want frustration or specific plays to be skewed into evidence that the player wants out. He noted that Kucherov will continue to play like the superstar he has been for a decade and a half.

Kucherov told teammates about the request during the Lightning's flight to Nashville on Friday. Cooper said the internal process likely made the team stronger. Kucherov has 1,142 career points, a franchise record. For the season, he has four goals and 14 assists for 18 points in 13 games. Nashville's Steven Stamkos, who previously held the Lightning scoring mark, said his reaction to the news was similar to that of others watching.

The Russian native has helped Tampa Bay win two Stanley Cups and made two other finals appearances. He led the NHL in scoring three times and won the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 2018-19 and 2025-26. Milstein told The Athletic that Kucherov has spoken to all involved parties and there is nothing else to add at this time.
