More than 50 years ago, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart met as young actors in the Royal Shakespeare Company. McKellen published a long tribute to Stewart on Instagram on Thursday, marking the start of this half-century friendship.
The two men worked together on the X-Men films, but their connection began in British theater. McKellen recalled asking Stewart if he was willing to risk his stage career for a role in Star Trek. McKellen noted that Stewart accepted the part, a decision he described as lucky for all involved.
Stewart died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. His spokesperson released a statement on social media Thursday confirming the death. The actor was 86. The statement attributed his passing to a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia.
McKellen wrote that Stewart wore his heart on his sleeve. He described Stewart as a man to rely on, admire, and love. The tribute highlighted Stewart's Yorkshire roots and his success across film, television, and theater.
The final film appearance for Stewart is Avengers: Doomsday. McKellen stated that this farewell performance is yet to be seen. The movie remains the last project in which the actor will appear on screen.
