New Port Richey Halloween event draws thousands to Main Street
What started as a small gathering in 2018 has grown into a major community attraction with thousands of visitors.

Thousands of residents and visitors are expected to fill Main Street and Grand Boulevard in New Port Richey on Friday, Oct. 31, for the Trick or Treat Downtown event. The free gathering runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and is presented by McPherson & Thomas, P.A., with The Florida Room serving as the host.
The event has expanded far beyond its original scope. Organizers Kacey Atkinson, her sister Kira Atkinson, and Lia Gallegos started the celebration in 2018. At the time, they anticipated only a couple hundred attendees. Kacey Atkinson recalled the early days, saying, "We thought we got all dressed up and nobody was going to come to our party. And we were surprised. We ended up having to buy more candy."
Today, the trio prepares for a much larger crowd. The event has become a staple for families looking to collect candy and explore local shops. McPherson & Thomas, P.A. has served as the title sponsor since the beginning. The law firm also converts its office into a haunted attraction, adding another draw for participants. Jennifer Thompson, a paralegal at the firm, noted, "Everybody loves it. We enjoy the giveback to the community. It’s a lot of fun to see everybody walk through."
Organizers say the growth mirrors a shift in public perception of the area. Lia Gallegos pointed out that downtown New Port Richey once carried a negative reputation. "Now when you hear people talk about New Port Richey it’s really positive. Everybody is excited about it," she said. Main Street and the nearby Railroad Square have seen increased weekend traffic. Kira Atkinson added, "Sometimes people don’t come down here too often, so it gives people an opportunity to see what we have and all the new businesses that we have."
Local business owners participate to build relationships with families. Nathan Ward, owner of Made Artisan Hall, said community involvement encourages customers to support local enterprises. "The more that you are involved in the community is kind of what the parents are looking for. So, they want to support a business that shows your support as well," Ward said.
While downtown New Port Richey hosts other major events like Chasco Fiesta and the Cotee River Bike Fest, this Halloween celebration has developed its own identity focused on families and children. The event is scheduled for Oct. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. along Main Street and Grand Boulevard.
