The Tampa Bay Rays survived Tuesday night with a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in 12 innings.
Milwaukee held a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the 12th. Cooper Pratt had hit a tiebreaking home run off Ian Seymour earlier in the inning. Junior Caminero started the Rays' rally with a grounder to third baseman Joey Ortiz. Ortiz's throw bounced past first baseman Jake Bauers for an error. Liam Hicks, Jonny DeLuca, Chandler Simpson and pinch-hitter Ben Williamson followed with consecutive singles off Shane Drohan. Nick Fortes scored the tying run on DeLuca's hit, and Williamson's chopper down the first base line scored the winning run.
Williamson entered the at-bat with one hit in 15 postseason at-bats. He said, "It's what you dream of as a player to be in that spot." Drohan had not pitched since Oct. 15. He said, "I knew what I was walking into. I just didn't do the job there." Kevin Cash, the Rays manager, said, "That was totally what I told him to do."
The Rays now lead the series in wins after avoiding a sweep. Milwaukee had won eight straight games. The Brewers were seeking to become the second team to sweep a League Championship Series and the World Series. Tampa Bay became the fifth team in 26 to win Game 4 after trailing 3-0 in a World Series. OptaSTATS listed the Rays as the fourth team to win an elimination game via an extra-inning comeback, joining the 1912 Boston Red Sox, the 1986 New York Mets and the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals.
Caminero left the game with a left foot injury but said he will play Wednesday. Cash said, "He'll play tomorrow on one leg. I'll make sure of it." Christian Yelich said, "Sometimes the game tests you. Sometimes the game makes you want to dig deep."
Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night at Tropicana Field. Jacob Misiorowski will start for the Brewers. Cash said he had not named a starter.
The game lasted 4 hours and 20 minutes. It ended at 12:28 a.m. The attendance was 40,514. Hamilton homered for Milwaukee. Chourio went 2 for 4 to reach 10 for 20 in the series. Simpson hit an RBI double in the second inning.
