Downtown St. Petersburg businesses captured a surge in revenue during the three World Series games held at Tropicana Field this week. The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in five games, securing their first championship since the franchise moved from Seattle in 1970. While local Rays supporters hoped for a home victory, the influx of visitors from Wisconsin provided a substantial financial lift to the area.

Brian Lowack, president of Visit St. Pete-Clearwater, noted that capturing the economic benefits of a championship is a primary goal for host cities. The Brewers' fan base, which has awaited this moment for decades, drove significant travel numbers. Ticket prices for the final two games in Milwaukee reached thousands of dollars, whereas many seats for Games 3 through 5 in St. Petersburg cost under $1,000. This price difference made Florida a more affordable destination for out-of-state fans.

Data from reseller TickPick indicated that 41 percent of tickets for Tuesday's Game 4 were purchased in Wisconsin, compared to 30 percent in Florida. The Fox broadcast crew estimated that 10,000 Brewers fans were present during the sellout crowd of 40,489 for Game 5. Darron Nelson, a visitor from Minnesota, cited the cost savings as his main reason for traveling south. He observed that tickets in his home region cost $2,000, while the same seats in Florida were available for $500.

City officials estimated that more than 100,000 people visited the downtown district for the three games, watch parties, and related events. Mark Ferguson, owner of Ferg’s Sports Bar & Grill, located across from the stadium, reported that his establishment recorded a month’s worth of sales during Game 3 alone. Beer sales improved further during Game 4 as the Brewers closed out the series with a 4-1 victory.

This financial gain concludes a challenging period for local businesses. The Rays played the 2025 season in Tampa after Hurricane Milton damaged the Tropicana Field roof in 2024, forcing a temporary relocation. Prior to that, the pandemic in 2020 saw the Rays advance to the World Series but play on a neutral site in Texas. During those years, downtown businesses operated under strict restrictions and temporary closures, making the recent spike in activity a notable recovery.

The Brewers' victory sent hundreds of fans onto the field for celebrations. The loud chants and energy from the visiting supporters filled the streets surrounding the ballpark. For the businesses in the immediate vicinity, the presence of the Brew Crew turned a series loss into a commercial success.
