Up to 14 inches of rain fell across eastern Hardee County, prompting emergency officials to declare a local state of emergency. Emergency Management Director Lane Schneider announced the declaration on Monday after torrential downpours saturated the region.

The heavy rainfall pushed water levels in local waterways to dangerous heights. Runoff surged directly into Charlie Creek and the Peace River. Conditions at the Pioneer Park Boat Ramp in Wauchula mirrored major storm surges. Officials on the scene reported that current river levels and flooding are similar to those seen during Hurricane Milton.

Rainfall totals varied across the county. Eastern pasture and farmland received between 12 and 14 inches. Most of the rest of the county recorded 8 inches. The maximum total of 14 inches occurred along the county's eastern border. Four roads sustained damage and will require significant repairs.

Schneider stated that the declaration allows the county to open up purchasing processes and provide resources. "It really allows us to open up some purchasing and things like that so we can move forward and provide resources," Schneider said. "It also shows we’re taking it seriously and shows the state we need help."

A couple of homeowners reported minor water intrusion, but authorities have not confirmed if any residential properties will suffer catastrophic damage. Schneider noted that conditions have not yet reached levels requiring evacuations. Officials have not determined the full extent of roadway destruction or the exact peak height of the Peace River. The river is expected to crest overnight before waters begin to recede.
