CLEARWATER, Fla. Voters in Clearwater and across Florida cast their ballots Tuesday in the 2026 midterm elections. The vote determines control of the U.S. House of Representatives and seats in the Senate. Local officials monitor turnout closely as polls close at varying times throughout the state.
The election arrives with high national stakes. This campaign cycle carries the largest price tag in U.S. history. A record number of incumbent lawmakers are retiring. Democrats aim to regain control of Congress. President Donald Trump’s approval rating stands at its lowest point since taking office. His popularity dip influences voter sentiment in key districts.
In Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Judge William Sullivan of the Plymouth Superior Court will announce a decision later this month. He is considering a motion to dismiss the case against Lindsay Clancy. Clancy’s attorney requested the dismissal or a new trial during a hearing held yesterday. The case involves first-degree murder charges related to the 2023 deaths of Clancy’s three young children in their Duxbury home.
The original trial ended in a mistrial in September. Jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict. The Plymouth County district attorney’s office has not publicly stated its next steps. Prosecutors may seek a new trial or pursue lesser charges. In a recent filing, prosecutors stated they intend to pursue justice for Clancy’s children.
Nationwide, the Associated Press and NPR are collaborating to call races on election night. Results in Florida may take days to finalize. The Trump administration is monitoring Republican turnout in crucial Senate races in Ohio, Kansas, and South Carolina. Polls in those states close earlier than in some other regions. A close race in South Carolina or Florida could indicate a challenging evening for Republicans.
The U.S. Supreme Court recently rejected a last-minute request from the Department of Justice to intervene in a dispute with California over voter rolls. The Justice Department sought to halt the processing of ballots for thousands of individuals identified as likely noncitizens. This legal battle adds another layer to the already complex election environment.
Voters in several states, including Florida, are weighing economic concerns alongside their choices. Rising gas prices and inflation remain top priorities. In Florida, local races will be decided alongside the national contests. The outcome of Tuesday’s vote will shape the legislative agenda for the coming years.
