One person was shot and a vehicle was struck during a daytime fight at the St. Teresa Apartments in Brooksville. The incident occurred just south of the county courthouse. Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis stated that deputies secured the apartment complex and accounted for everyone involved within minutes of the first call.
According to Nienhuis, the confrontation between acquaintances may have started over a speaker. Gunfire erupted during the dispute, hitting the victim and a nearby car multiple times. Investigators noted that the attack was not random. The victim called 911 from a few blocks away. Dispatchers initially did not know where the shooting took place. Deputies later confirmed the location as the apartment complex.
Nienhuis identified the suspect as a blind man. He said the injury count was fortunate given the suspect's condition. "The person we have in custody, the person of interest, the suspect in this case, is actually blind, the one who did the shooting, so it is really fortunate that there weren't more injuries," Nienhuis said.
Authorities have not released the names of the suspect or the victim. The specific medical condition of the injured person has not been made public. Officials have also not announced the formal charges filed against the man taken into custody.
