Christian Watson spent the better part of an hour in a hospital after suffering a chest injury.
The Green Bay Packers wide receiver sustained a broken rib in the second quarter of Thursday night's game against the Carolina Panthers. He made a 53-yard catch on the play, which also resulted in Panthers cornerback Will Lee sustaining a hamstring injury. Watson described the immediate aftermath as difficult, noting that he could not breathe on the field and was spitting up blood by the time he reached the sideline. Medical staff ordered a CT scan to rule out internal bleeding, and he spent between 45 minutes and an hour at the facility before being transported back to Lambeau Field.
Watson returned to the game in the third quarter with padding on his broken rib. His teammates reacted with visible shock to his return to the field. Safety Javon Bullard called the situation crazy, while safety Xavier McKinney said the move showed resilience and a deep love for the team. Watson compared the experience to watching professional wrestling as a child, specifically referencing WWE Smackdown vs. Raw when he saw cameras filming him leaving the ambulance. He mentioned receiving dap-ups from teammates that felt like a resurrection.
The injury occurred during a period of high production for Watson. He already had six catches for 100 yards when the play happened. Through the first eight games of the season, he has recorded 42 catches for 708 yards, both career highs. This marks a breakthrough season for a player who has missed significant time in previous years due to various injuries, including a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Watson said he never considered staying out once the CT scan results came back clean.
Watson's return helped the Packers defend their lead late in the fourth quarter. Carolina had cut a 27-10 deficit to 27-19. With about two and a half minutes remaining, Watson caught a 7-yard pass on a third-and-2 play to help seal the victory. He finished the night with eight catches for 113 yards. Watson stated that being on the field means everything to him after missing so much time in the past.
