Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and State Representative Angie Nixon face off on Tuesday for a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate. Voters in the Clearwater area and across Florida will choose the candidate who finishes out the term originally held by Marco Rubio.

The seat became open after Rubio was appointed to President Donald Trump's cabinet following the 2024 elections. Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Moody to replace Rubio earlier this year. Moody is running for the first time before Florida voters to secure the remainder of the term, which ends in January 2029.

Moody has campaigned on her record as the state's former attorney general and her support for conservative policies. Her opponent, Nixon, is a current member of the Florida House of Representatives. Nixon aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America during the primary season.

Nixon emerged from the Democratic primary as an upset winner against Alex Vindman. Vindman had been the heavy favorite to secure the nomination. Nixon, who was largely unknown outside of Jacksonville, gained late endorsements and a strong final push to win the party's choice. This victory set up the current general election contest.

The race is viewed as a key test for both parties in the 2026 midterm elections. A win for Moody would allow Republicans to maintain their hold on this specific statewide Senate seat after Rubio left for Washington. The outcome could also signal the strength of each party's base in a state where Republicans have won most recent statewide elections.

If Nixon defeats Moody, it would mark a major breakthrough for Democrats in Florida. The result will be known on Tuesday night. The winner will take office and serve until January 2029.
