President Donald Trump suggested Venezuela could join the Union as the 51st state during a campaign stop in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday.

Standing at the podium, the president pointed to a tanker off the coast and claimed the vessel carried one million barrels of Venezuelan oil. He stated that the United States secured this supply at zero cost to the American taxpayer. Trump described the arrangement as the greatest oil victory in history. The deal was struck with the interim government in Caracas, which received backing from the White House. He said the agreement would cover billions of barrels in total.

The president framed the Venezuelan operation as a key success amid falling approval ratings. Opinion polls show his popularity has dropped to record lows ahead of next week's midterm elections. These declines coincide with a controversial war in Iran and new tariffs on global goods. Gas prices have risen sharply since February, when the conflict began and Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. That passageway handles 20% of the world's oil supplies. Trump argued that fuel prices will plummet soon due to the Venezuelan deal. He posted on Truth Social that he made the Western Hemisphere the energy capital of the world by unleashing energy dominance from Alaska to Venezuela.

Venezuela joins a list of territories the president has discussed acquiring, which also includes Greenland, Canada, and Mexico. Trump noted that the South American nation could become a prosperous 51st state. He called this outcome possible.

Critics have raised doubts about the strategic value of the oil deal. They argue the administration has not pushed for a democratic transition in Venezuela. No elections have taken place since US forces raided the Caracas residence of former President Nicolás Maduro in January. Maduro was taken to New York to face criminal charges. The US military deposed him nine months ago. The current interim government operates under the support of the Trump administration.

The urgency of the oil agreement follows the president's decision to enter the war with Iran in February. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran caused a nationwide spike in gasoline costs. This increase added pressure to the cost of living for American voters. Trump used the rally to highlight the Venezuelan tanker as a counter to these rising prices.
