The University Interscholastic League state executive committee voted 3-0 on Wednesday to declare Argyle junior quarterback Hayes Hackney eligible for the remainder of the season. The unanimous decision reverses a 6-0 ruling from the District 3-5A DII executive committee dated Oct. 20, which had found that Hackney failed to meet residence requirements for Argyle Independent School District.
Hackney joined the Eagles in January after starting quarterback play at Prosper Walnut Grove for two seasons. He missed last week's contest against Colleyville Heritage due to the initial disqualification. The ruling clears him to play in Friday's regular season finale against Nevada Community and in the postseason, where Argyle will enter as a top seed after securing the district title.
The Eagles currently hold an 8-1 record and are ranked No. 3 in 5A Division II. Hackney has completed 165 of 221 passes for 2,574 yards, 32 touchdowns, and two interceptions during the first eight games. Sophomore Cobe Wilson started in Hackney's absence, throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-35 victory over Heritage that clinched the district crown.
Argyle will host Nevada Community on Friday to conclude the regular season. The team will then await its playoff opponent in 5A Division II. Hackney is cleared to take the starting position for both the final game and the postseason run.
