The San Francisco 49ers acquired defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick. The deal reunites the veteran with the franchise that drafted him with the seventh overall selection in 2016. General Manager John Lynch has stated the 49ers will continue to evaluate the roster during their bye week with the November 10 trade deadline approaching.

Buckner's return addresses a persistent weakness in the 49ers' pass rush. The team currently ranks 31st in the NFL in pressure rate when rushing four players, a figure standing at 23 percent. Buckner has missed only 14 games in his ten-year career, a durability record that contrasts sharply with recent struggles at the defensive line position for San Francisco. Lynch called the 2020 trade of Buckner to Indianapolis the toughest decision of his tenure.

The 49ers have previously attempted to fill the void left by Buckner using various strategies. They drafted Javon Kinlaw, signed Javon Hargrave on a major contract, and utilized a combination involving Maliek Collins. None of these moves produced the consistent interior pressure the team sought. The current season has seen multiple injuries along the defensive front, further complicating the depth chart. Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the defensive line and receiver positions are the primary areas of focus for potential acquisitions.

Veteran players on the roster have openly advocated for additional moves. Tight end George Kittle, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and offensive tackle Trent Williams have been known to press Lynch and Shanahan for trade information. Williams, who is 38 years old, stated that the players view draft picks as gambles and prefer proven talent. He noted that the team is willing to trade top picks if a suitable opportunity arises to win a Super Bowl.

The 49ers face a critical window for improvement. They are currently 6-1 and have lost only their most recent game in Atlanta. That defeat exposed deficiencies in both the pass rush and the receiving corps. Shanahan said the staff is actively working on trades in those two areas. He noted that while some injured players may return as soon as Week 9, the team cannot guarantee their availability for the entire remainder of the season.

Several players are currently dealing with injuries. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. has a hamstring issue, while edge rusher Nick Bosa is recovering from a calf injury. Defensive tackle C.J. West underwent knee surgery. Wide receivers Mike Evans and Demarcus Robinson are dealing with Achilles tendinitis and an ankle injury, respectively. Rookie wideout De'Zhaun Stribling is expected to return in December from ankle surgery. Shanahan indicated the team might acquire players even if they are only needed for one or two weeks until these individuals return.

Potential trade targets include Chargers pass rusher Khalil Mack, Jets edge rusher Will McDonald IV, Cardinals defender Josh Sweat, and Buccaneers rusher Yaya Diaby. On the offensive side, Jacksonville's Brian Thomas Jr., Cleveland's Jerry Jeudy, and Colts wideout Josh Downs are options. Downs requested a trade on Wednesday. Shanahan said the team is looking for a happy medium that improves the roster without overpaying in draft capital.

The 49ers could also pursue a larger move involving a star player. Raiders end Maxx Crosby and Jets wideout Garrett Wilson are considered names that would change the team's trajectory. However, such deals would likely require multiple top picks, including first-rounders. Lynch has previously executed high-profile trades for Williams and running back Christian McCaffrey. The team believes it has a chance to break through this season and is prepared to spend assets if the right player is available.
