New College of Florida has approved a plan to purchase the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus. The college’s Finance and Administration committee voted on Friday to fund the acquisition with an unconventional debt structure. The total cost for the takeover exceeds $47 million.
New College secured a $40 million loan from BankUnited. An unnamed accredited investor will provide the remaining $7.5 million. This type of financing often carries a higher interest rate than traditional bank loans. The committee approved this approach to close the funding gap for the controversial campus transfer.
The vote comes as voters in Florida prepare for the general election. In-person early voting has ended. On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, voters must cast ballots at their assigned precincts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mail-in ballots can also be dropped off at local supervisor of elections offices. Orange County Supervisor of Elections confirmed to WESH-2 that at least five trees outside an early voting site in Orlando had swastikas painted on them.
Two write-in candidates for Florida governor shared their platforms recently. Erik Morris wants to alter state funding for schools, insurance regulations, and data center approvals. Libertarian candidate Scott Jewett stated that the state can take more action to lower the cost of living for residents.
In Tampa, the Tampa Immigrants Rights Committee held a vigil Sunday evening at Centennial Park in Ybor City. The event combined Day of the Dead remembrance with calls to end local police cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Participants honored individuals who organizers said died due to ICE violence.
The New College of Florida acquisition is scheduled to proceed following the committee’s Friday vote. The college will work with the unnamed investor to finalize the $7.5 million loan terms. BankUnited will manage the primary $40 million loan facility. The transfer of the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus is set to move forward as part of the college’s expansion strategy.
