Hackers stole more than $6 billion from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, in what researchers have called the largest cyber heist in history. The theft occurred in the late afternoon, and the bulk of the funds were transferred out of the system in approximately 20 minutes. The incident affected a wide range of users, from large investment funds to individual investors who trade digital currencies on the platform.

According to researchers, the attackers bypassed multiple security systems to access trading accounts held at the exchange. Ari Redbord, the global head of policy at TRM Labs, a major crypto research firm, described the event as a major financial loss. He noted that the stolen amount of $6.36 billion could be moved at the speed of the internet, creating a distinct challenge for recovery efforts.

Multiple research firms, including TRM Labs, state that evidence points strongly to North Korea as the perpetrator. Redbord cited the country's history of cyberattacks and the sophisticated nature of the operation. He explained that North Korea maintains teams of professional hackers within its military. These teams are distinct from commercial hackers, as their goals often include weapons proliferation and destabilizing activity rather than simple profit.

Researchers describe the North Korean group as highly organized and motivated. The precision of the attack and the scale of the theft align with the capabilities previously observed in state-sponsored cyber operations. This attribution adds a geopolitical dimension to the financial loss experienced by the exchange and its users.

Binance has pledged to fully reimburse customers who lost money in the heist. The company is working with other crypto exchanges to recover the assets. So far, Binance has managed to freeze approximately $3 billion that may have been stolen from its customers. The recovery process relies on the traceability of cryptocurrency transactions, which function similarly to serial numbers on currency.

The recovery effort is described as a race between the hackers and security researchers. The attackers are attempting to move the stolen cryptocurrencies into accounts they fully control. Researchers are working to stop these transfers before the funds become difficult to trace. Not all of the stolen money is expected to be recoverable, but the exchange is pursuing all available avenues.

This incident follows a 2023 case in which Binance pleaded guilty to violating anti-money laundering laws. In that case, the company paid more than $4 billion in penalties. Critics of the crypto sector point out that exchanges like Binance operate in a regulatory gray area, unlike traditional stock exchanges. This lack of strict regulation means that the full list of affected account holders may not be immediately known.

Binance continues to work on recovering the funds and ensuring that affected customers are made whole. The company has stated that it is coordinating with other exchanges in the industry. The event has drawn attention to the security infrastructure of major digital currency platforms and the ongoing role of state actors in the crypto space.
