Tyrese Haliburton will sit out Wednesday night's matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers due to a hamstring strain. The Indiana Pacers guard, who returned to the court after missing the entire 2025-26 season with a torn Achilles, is expected to undergo further evaluation by specialists later this afternoon.
Coach Rick Carlisle spoke with 1075 The Fan in Indianapolis on Wednesday morning about the guard's status. He expressed a desire for the injury to remain minor and not become a long-term issue. The team plans for Haliburton to meet with a hamstring expert, team doctors, and other officials to determine the next steps for his recovery.
Haliburton has been a standout performer in the Pacers' opening games. Over the first four contests of the season, he averaged 21.8 points, 9.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game. His shooting splits stood at 51.6 percent from the field, 37.0 percent from three-point range, and 86.7 percent from the free-throw line. He had played a key role in the team's opener, including hitting clutch shots in the final moments.
The injury complicates the Pacers' immediate schedule. The team faces the Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, and Atlanta Hawks over the coming week. They are already managing a thin roster, with center Ivica Zubac and guard TJ McConnell listed as out for Wednesday's game. Guard Andrew Nembhard is questionable due to a neck and back injury, further limiting Indiana's options at the point guard position.
Without their primary ball-handler, the coaching staff must adjust the lineup. Pascal Siakam is expected to take on a larger offensive load. The team may also shift toward smaller lineups, placing Obi Toppin at the center position. This approach addresses the absence of their top interior player while trying to maintain scoring efficiency.
Haliburton's injury follows a difficult stretch for the franchise. The Pacers fell just short of a championship in the 2025 NBA Finals when Haliburton suffered the Achilles tear in Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The team spent more than a year waiting for his return before facing this new setback early in the 2026-27 campaign.
The guard's absence adds to a growing list of star players missing games due to injury this season. Other notable names currently out on Wednesday night include Anthony Edwards, Jalen Williams, Paolo Banchero, Kawhi Leonard, Jaren Jackson Jr., Chet Holmgren, and Alperen Sengun. Several other high-profile players, such as Brandon Ingram, Jimmy Butler, Kon Knueppel, and Kristaps Porzingis, have not yet made their season debuts.
League officials and analysts often discuss the NBA schedule as a factor in injury rates, though the early timing of these setbacks makes that explanation less clear. The current style of play, which emphasizes speed and explosive movement, places significant physical demands on athletes. This pace is considered effective for winning games, but it increases the likelihood of soft tissue injuries for players pushing their bodies to their limits.
