Tampa council opens applications for Viera vacancy

Tampa City Council is accepting applications to fill the seat vacated by Council Member Luis Viera. Viera resigned yesterday to pursue a position in the State Legislature. The council will select a replacement from the applicant pool before a new member is elected in March.

Applications open today and close on November 9 at noon. The remaining six council members will choose the interim appointee. This process follows Viera's decision to leave his local role for the statehouse.

Meanwhile, election officials are dealing with weather disruptions in Florida. Torrential rain along the central eastern coastline has flooded roads. Governor Ron DeSantis issued an executive order on Monday declaring a state of emergency in multiple counties. Officials must designate and notify voters of new polling sites in affected areas.

In the gubernatorial race, Republican candidate Byron Donalds held a campaign stop in Beef O'Brady's. He was joined by prominent state Republicans who urged supporters to vote. Governor DeSantis told the crowd that Republicans need to increase voter turnout in Polk County. DeSantis endorsed Donalds in September, after the primary election.

The city's administrative timeline is set. The council must act before the March election. Voters in the affected coastal counties should check local notices for updated polling locations. The application deadline for the Tampa seat is firm at noon on the ninth.
