A single adult now requires a pre-tax income of at least $80,000 to live comfortably in every U.S. state, according to a new financial analysis. The study, conducted by SmartAsset, indicates that the financial floor for basic survival has risen sharply, with the threshold exceeding $100,000 in nearly half of the country.
The research utilized data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator, last updated in February 2026. Analysts adjusted these baseline costs using the 50/30/20 budgeting rule. Under this framework, 50% of income covers necessities such as housing and utilities, 30% is allocated for discretionary spending, and 20% is set aside for retirement and emergency savings. The resulting figures represent the annual income needed to meet these criteria.
For households with two working adults and two children, the financial burden is heavier. In 40 states, a family of four needs at least $200,000 annually to live comfortably. Massachusetts sits at the top of the expense list for these households, with a required income of $329,555. West Virginia is the most affordable state for a single adult, where the threshold is $81,245. Mississippi is the most affordable state for a family of four, requiring $187,533.
The cost of living has increased in 44 states compared to 2025. Montana recorded the largest jump, with the income needed for a single adult rising 8.6% to $100,797. New York followed closely with an 8.4% increase to $124,342. Maine, California, and Massachusetts also saw double-digit percentage increases in their cost-of-living thresholds.
Six states experienced a decline in the income needed for comfort. Tennessee saw the largest drop, with the requirement falling 1.7% to $89,898. Maryland, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas also reported lower thresholds in 2026 than in the previous year. In Florida, the income needed for a single adult is $100,214, representing a 2.9% increase from 2025.

The figures are based on the most recent data available from the MIT Living Wage Calculator and reflect the annual, pre-tax income required to cover minimum basic needs and maintain the specified budget structure.
